Do you need a vignette in Austria with a rental car? Prices and rules (2026)
According to ASFINAG, the Austrian motorway company, checked on 31 October 2026, cars up to 3.5 tonnes need a valid vignette on Austrian motorways and expressways; the digital vignette for a car costs €9.60 for 1 day, €12.80 for 10 days, €32.00 for 2 months and €106.80 for the 2026 annual vignette, and some tunnels and Alpine passes charge an extra section toll.
Prices and rules change, and each rental company has its own toll fees. We quote the motorway operators and governments word for word, with the date we checked them; this is information, not legal advice. Before you drive, check the official page and ask the rental company how it charges you for tolls.

With a rental car
The official pages we read do not say whether rental cars come with a vignette. Before you book, ask the rental company whether the car will have a valid vignette for the dates of your trip.
The official site also says:
You can check whether a valid digital vignette exists for a vehicle license plate number via the validity query.
