Tolls with a rental car in Europe: how to pay, country by country (2026)

Of the 13 European countries on this page, 5 use a vignette for cars on their motorways (Austria, Czechia, Hungary, Slovenia and Switzerland) and 8 charge tolls per trip, at toll booths or by camera (Croatia, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal and Spain); for each one we quote the motorway operator or the government, last checked on 31 October 2026.

Prices and rules change, and each rental company has its own toll fees. We quote the motorway operators and governments word for word, with the date we checked them; this is information, not legal advice. Before you drive, check the official page and ask the rental company how it charges you for tolls.

Every country

“How you pay”, “Price for a car” and “Rental cars” are our short summaries; each country page quotes the official sentences, with the link and the date. “Not mentioned” means that the official pages we read say nothing about rental cars.

How we check

We read the pages of each motorway operator or government (for example Infraestruturas de Portugal, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, AutoPASS, Autostrade per l'Italia, ASFINAG and the Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security) and quote them word for word. A price appears only if we read it on an official page that answered normally on the day of the check; otherwise we say so. We write that a rule is about rental cars only when the official text says so. More on the About page. Spotted a change? Tell us.
