Dublin public transport: the fine, validation and contactless payment (2026)
According to Transport for Ireland (TFI), run by the National Transport Authority, checked on 31 October 2026, fare evasion may result in a €100 standard fare (penalty fine) plus your unpaid fare, reduced to €50 if paid within 21 days on Dublin Bus and to €45 within 14 days on the Luas, where you must tap on at the platform before boarding and tap off when you leave.
Fines and payment rules change, often at the start of the year. We quote the transport company’s own pages word for word, with the date we checked them; this is information, not legal advice. The inspector, the fine notice and the official page decide.
