Budapest public transport: the fine, validation and contactless payment (2026)
According to BKK, the Centre for Budapest Transport, checked on 31 October 2026, the basic penalty fare is 25,000 HUF, reduced to 12,000 HUF if you pay on the spot, and from 2 November 2026 these amounts rise to 30,000 HUF and 15,000 HUF; paper tickets must be validated before you start a metro trip or immediately after boarding other vehicles, and since 22 April 2026 a bank card tap buys and validates a single ticket on all metro lines.
Fines and payment rules change, often at the start of the year. We quote the transport company’s own pages word for word, with the date we checked them; this is information, not legal advice. The inspector, the fine notice and the official page decide.
