Driving in Nova Scotia on a foreign licence: visitors and new residents (2026)

Foreign licence · Nova Scotia2026

According to the Government of Nova Scotia, checked on 31 October 2026, two government pages disagree: the licence exchange page says a temporary visitor can drive for up to 180 days and new residents have 180 days to exchange their licence, but the Service Nova Scotia driver’s licence page says 90 days for visitors and for new residents in one paragraph (and 180 days in another), so plan on 90 days unless the Registry of Motor Vehicles confirms the longer period.

These rules differ from place to place, and they change. We quote the official pages word for word, with the date we checked them; this is information, not legal advice. Car rental companies and insurers can ask for more than the law, for example an international driving permit or a translation: ask them before you book.
