Do Australians need a visa for Turkmenistan?

We quote the official text word for word and do not summarise it. The first official sentence does not match a wording we summarise.

Official text, “Visa measures”:

Each country or territory decides its own entry and exit rules, including health border screening measures. To find out what you need to enter a destination, ask their embassy, consulate or immigration office.

Visas

You need a letter of invitation from the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan to apply for a visa, even if you're only transiting. You must keep the letter of invitation with you when you are in Turkmenistan.

You need a visa to enter, even if you're only transiting.

You must get a visa before you arrive.

Make sure you have the right visa for the purpose of your visit, especially for business and work visas.

Before you travel, make sure your visa has the correct:

  • passport number
  • date of birth
  • validity

Turkmen visas specify:

  • the validity of the visa
  • the number of entries you're allowed to make
  • how long you can stay

You can only stay in Turkmenistan for the number of days shown on your visa.

There are penalties for infringing your visa, including:

  • fines
  • arrest
  • deportation

Transit visas

Transit visa holders must:

  • register at entry and exit points
  • let authorities know of any changes to their route through the country

You can't change a transit visa to another class of visa once you're in Turkmenistan.

There is no embassy or consulate of Turkmenistan in Australia. See the Turkmenistan Government's list of embassies and consular offices.

Also in the official “Travel” section:

Border crossings from Iran

The Iran-Turkmenistan border is open for humanitarian purposes at Sarakhs, Bajgiran or Artyk border crossing posts. Crossing the border requires a special authorisation from the Government of Turkmenistan.

If you want to enter Turkmenistan from Iran, you must email the Australian Embassy in Moscow before you travel at crisis.moscow@dfat.gov.au and provide the following:

  • colour copy of your Australian passport
  • information on which border crossing you'll use (Sarakhs, Bajgiran or Artyk)
  • details of your outward flight with a departure time from Turkmenistan within 72 hours of your arrival into Turkmenistan

You must wait for a confirmation email from the Australian Embassy before crossing the border.

You'll need to provide a printout of your valid airline ticket at the relevant border crossing.

You'll need to pay visa fees of between USD 55-100 in cash on arrival in Turkmenistan.

Border crossing requirements may change without notice. Check with Turkmenistan authorities on the latest entry requirements and border arrangements before you travel.

Border measures

Borders can open and close, and entry and exit requirements may change without notice, especially during a conflict. Check the latest information from local authorities.

Plan for possible delays at border crossings. Make sure you have all documentation, and enough food, water and medication.

Travel restrictions may apply to Australians travelling overland from Turkmenistan to neighbouring countries.

Crossing the border requires a special authorisation from the Government of Turkmenistan. The authorisation process may be lengthy. A passport and valid visa may not be sufficient documentation. Don't travel to the border with Turkmenistan until you're sure you have the paperwork and travel arrangements required to cross.

Normal visa fees may also be applied on arrival in Turkmenistan.

Local transportation from the border to the airport may be expensive and not assured. We recommend you have transport pre-arranged prior to crossing the border.

You must pay for and take a COVID-19 (PCR) test on arrival, and if your test results are positive, you may be required to quarantine in a state-run facility or at your place of residence under medical supervision.

Access to the internet and mobile phone networks is restricted. Connectivity may not be available in rural and regional centres.

Contact your airline or the nearest embassy or consulate to confirm entry and quarantine requirements. You'll also need to check the rules of neighbouring countries.

Other formalities

When you arrive, you must:

  • present a migration card
  • pay a migration fee
  • register with the State Migration Service within 3 working days of arrival, not counting the arrival date

If you don't register, or if you stay in Turkmenistan with an expired visa, you may face:

  • fines
  • arrest
  • deportation

All foreign citizens, except accredited diplomats, must pay a tourist fee for each day of their stay. Your hotel may include the fee in your bill.

Adults travelling with a child may need evidence of parental, custodial or access rights. They may also need a letter of consent from any non-travelling parent.

Import and export

Customs rules control the import or export of:

  • carpets
  • jewellery
  • musical instruments
  • antiques
  • protected animals

You need an export permit from the ‘Turkmenhaly’ State Association to export carpets. You may be able to get this permit in some private shops.

How long must my Australian passport be valid for Turkmenistan?

In its “Travel” section, Smartraveller gives no passport validity period specific to Turkmenistan.

The official “Passport” text below is Smartraveller's general advice, the same on every destination page. Check the rule with the embassy of the country and with your airline before you travel.

Official text, “Passport”:

Validity

Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months before entering or departing. This includes for transit.

If your passport expires too soon, you might not be able to travel.

The Australian Government doesn’t make these rules. Check your passport’s expiry date before you go. If you’re not sure, it’s a good idea to get a new passport.

The same section also has Smartraveller's general notes (“Lost or stolen passport”, “Passport with 'X' gender identifier”), the same on every destination page: read them on the official page.
