Do Australians need a visa for Sri Lanka?
We quote the official text word for word and do not summarise it. The first official sentence does not match a wording we summarise.
Official text, “Visas and border measures”:
Each country or territory decides its own entry and exit rules, including health border screening measures. To find out what you need to enter a destination, ask their embassy, consulate or immigration office.
Visas
To enter Sri Lanka, you'll need a valid visa or an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). You should do this before you travel, as you can no longer obtain an ETA on arrival at Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport.
The ETA is free for Australian passport holders travelling to Sri Lanka for tourism. It allows you to stay for up to 30 days. If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a visa extension and pay the relevant fees.
If you engage in activities that breach your visa conditions, you could be detained or deported.
Entry and exit conditions can change at short notice.
Check the Sri Lanka ETA website or contact the High Commission of Sri Lanka for details about visas, currency, customs and quarantine rules before you travel.
Check when your visa expires. You could receive a large fine if you overstay.
Yellow fever and Cholera
If you're travelling from a country with yellow fever or cholera you need to show evidence that you've received the relevant vaccines.
You need a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you've travelled to, or transited an affected country in the 9 days before you travel to Sri Lanka. Babies under one year old are exempt.
Border authorities and airlines may request evidence of vaccinations. All travellers should carry proof of vaccination status in English.

How long must my Australian passport be valid for Sri Lanka?
In its “Travel” section, Smartraveller gives no passport validity period specific to Sri Lanka.
The official “Passport” text below is Smartraveller's general advice, the same on every destination page. Check the rule with the embassy of the country and with your airline before you travel.
Official text, “Passport”:
Validity
Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months before entering or departing. This includes for transit.
If your passport expires too soon, you might not be able to travel.
The Australian Government doesn’t make these rules. Check your passport’s expiry date before you go. If you’re not sure, it’s a good idea to get a new passport.
The same section also has Smartraveller's general notes (“Lost or stolen passport”, “Passport with 'X’ gender identifier”), the same on every destination page: read them on the official page.
