Do Australians need a visa for South Africa?
We quote the official text word for word and do not summarise it. The first official sentence does not match a wording we summarise.
Official text, “Visas and border measures”:
Each country or territory decides its own entry and exit rules, including health border screening measures. To find out what you need to enter a destination, ask their embassy, consulate or immigration office.
Visa-free travel for short stays
You don't need a visa if you're visiting for tourism purposes for up to 90 days. In other cases, you'll need a visa.
Leaving and re-entering South Africa won't automatically give you another 90 days.
Check South Africa's immigration rules about:
- overstaying visas
- working in or migrating to South Africa
- changing your visa status
- extending your visa by travelling to a neighbouring country and attempting to return

Online Traveller Declaration
If you're entering or leaving South Africa by air, land or sea, you need to complete an online traveller declaration prior to travel. This includes South African citizens, residents and foreign travellers. You need to submit the online declaration within 24 hours of departure on the last leg of your journey to South Africa, and within 24 hours of your departure from South Africa.
If you can’t complete the declaration form ahead of travel, you'll be directed to complete the process at the airport. See the South African Revenue Service website for information on customs and border entry.
Yellow fever
You need a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter South Africa if you're arriving from a country where yellow fever occurs.

Other formalities
South African authorities:
- don't accept provisional travel documents
- accept Australian emergency passports
Travel with children
Children travelling on a valid passport with one or both parents are no longer required to present a birth certificate, parental consent letter and other supporting documentation. However, this is still required for other situations, including unaccompanied minors (under the age of 18) travelling, legal guardianship or for dual nationals travelling on their South African passport (see 'Local laws').
To check the requirements for other situations, such as legal guardianship, unaccompanied travelling minors, or for dual nationals travelling on their South African passport, visit the South African Department of Home Affairs website.

How long must my Australian passport be valid for South Africa?
In its “Travel” section, Smartraveller gives no passport validity period specific to South Africa.
The official “Passport” text below is Smartraveller's general advice, the same on every destination page. Check the rule with the embassy of the country and with your airline before you travel.
Official text, “Passport”:
Validity
Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months before entering or departing. This includes for transit.
If your passport expires too soon, you might not be able to travel.
The Australian Government doesn’t make these rules. Check your passport’s expiry date before you go. If you’re not sure, it’s a good idea to get a new passport.
If travelling from other Southern African countries to South Africa, make sure you have at least two blank pages in your passport. Failure to comply could result in authorities refusing you entry, resulting in detention or being returned to your original point of entry.
If travelling to multiple African countries on one trip, ensure you have enough blank pages to accommodate the requirements of all countries you plan to visit.
Lost or stolen passport
Your passport is valuable and can be used by others to commit crimes.
Don’t let anyone trick you into giving it to them. Always keep it in a safe place.
If your passport is lost or stolen, tell the Australian Government:
- In Australia: contact the Australian Passport Information Service.
- Overseas: contact the nearest Australian embassy or consulate.
If your passport is lost while in transit, the Australian High Commission is limited in the amount of assistance it can provide. It's unlikely that border officials at the airports will contact the High Commission on your behalf. Officials may detain you until the next flight to your original point of entry.
Passport with 'X' gender identifier
Australian passports comply with international standards for sex and gender. If your passport has an 'X' in the sex field, we can’t guarantee your entry or transit to other countries. Ask the embassy or consulate of your destinations if they’ll accept your passport with an 'X' gender marker. Check all transit destinations too.
