Do Australians need a visa for Qatar?

We quote the official text word for word and do not summarise it. The first official sentence does not match a wording we summarise.

Official text, “Visas and border measures”:

Each country or territory decides its own entry and exit rules, including health border screening measures. To find out what you need to enter a destination, ask their embassy, consulate or immigration office.

Visas

Australian passport holders are entitled to apply for a visa on arrival. The type of visa you need will depend on your country of residence and the purpose of your travel.

You may be asked to show proof of your accommodation for the duration of your stay in Qatar on arrival at Hamad International Airport.

Entry and exit rules can change at short notice. For details about visas, currency, customs and quarantine regulations, contact:

  • Visas & Immigration (Hamad International Airport)
  • the Embassy of the State of Qatar
  • the official State of Qatar Government website (in English)

Qatari authorities won't issue visas in an Australian emergency passport. You can only use an emergency passport to leave or travel through Qatar.

Borders and departing Qatar

Borders can open and close and entry and exit requirements can change without notice. Check information about airports, airlines and border crossings before you travel by air, land or sea.

The land border between Qatar and Saudi Arabia remains open. It may close or have restricted hours at short notice. Plan for possible delays at border crossings. Make sure you have all documentation, and enough food, water and medication.

Transiting through Qatar is permitted if you meet the requirements of your final destination country. There are no additional requirements for transiting passengers by air, even if you choose to use the transit hotel within the airport. Further information about transiting through Qatar by air can be found on the webpage for Hamad International Airport and Visit Qatar.

For more information, call 109 from inside Qatar or +974 44069999 from outside Qatar, or contact the nearest Qatari embassy or consulate.

Other formalities

Travel bans

You may be placed under a travel ban if you're involved in a dispute about (but not limited to):

  • business
  • labour
  • employment
  • fines

You won't be able to leave the country if you're a tourist, visitor, or resident identity card (QID) holder.

Travel bans are strictly enforced. They can take months or even years to resolve.

The Embassy can't intervene to have your travel ban lifted. Only Qatari authorities, and in very limited cases your sponsor, can remove travel bans.

Private Qatari citizens may also initiate travel bans against foreigners.

The government may issue travel bans on people who:

  • are charged with criminal offences
  • are under investigation
  • are involved in financial or labour disputes
  • have unpaid debts or who have passed bad cheques
  • have unresolved civil legal proceedings

How long must my Australian passport be valid for Qatar?

In its “Travel” section, Smartraveller gives no passport validity period specific to Qatar.

The official “Passport” text below is Smartraveller's general advice, the same on every destination page. Check the rule with the embassy of the country and with your airline before you travel.

Official text, “Passport”:

Validity

Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months before entering or departing. This includes for transit.

If your passport expires too soon, you might not be able to travel.

The Australian Government doesn’t make these rules. Check your passport’s expiry date before you go. If you’re not sure, it’s a good idea to get a new passport.

Lost or stolen passport

Your passport is valuable and can be used by others to commit crimes.

Don’t let anyone trick you into giving it to them. Always keep it in a safe place.

If your passport is lost or stolen, tell the Australian Government:

  • In Australia: contact the Australian Passport Information Service.
  • Overseas: contact the nearest Australian embassy or consulate.

If you're holding an Australian emergency passport, you can only use this to depart or transit through Qatar. It can't be used to enter Qatar.

Qatari authorities will not issue a visa in an emergency passport.

The same section also has Smartraveller's general notes (“Passport with ‘X’ gender identifier”), the same on every destination page: read them on the official page.
