Do Australians need a visa for Pakistan?
We quote the official text word for word and do not summarise it. The first official sentence does not match a wording we summarise.
Official text, “Visas and border measures”:
Each country or territory decides its own entry and exit rules, including health border screening measures. To find out what you need to enter a destination, ask their embassy, consulate or immigration office.
Visa conditions
Entry and exit requirements vary depending on the passport you use to travel (see the 'Passport' section below for more information).
If you choose to travel to Pakistan, you'll need to get a visa in advance to enter Pakistan if you're travelling on your Australian passport. See the Pakistan Online Visa System for information.
You need to apply for a visa prior to arrival if travelling for diplomatic or official purposes.
To depart Pakistan, you must have either:
- a valid Pakistani visa; or
- a valid National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis; or
- a valid Pakistani passport; or
- a valid exit permit.
Authorities may stop you from boarding your flight if your visa has expired. You could also face heavy penalties, including fines and detention.
Don't overstay your visa.
If your visa has expired, contact the Ministry of Interior for an exit permit.
Illegal entry into Pakistan is an offence and subject to deportation or imprisonment. There is currently no process for regularisation of status for illegal entrants, which is necessary for onward travel.
Entry and exit conditions can change at short notice. Contact the Pakistan High Commission in Canberra or the nearest Pakistani embassy or consulate for the latest information on visas, currency, customs and other travel requirements.
Border measures
The current policies for travellers entering Pakistan can be found on Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority website.

Other formalities
Yellow fever vaccination
Yellow fever is a serious disease caused by a mosquito borne virus. It is preventable by vaccination.
To enter Pakistan you may need a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. Some airlines may also require proof of vaccination when you depart the country.
When entering Australia, you must declare if you’ve visited a yellow fever risk country or area

Travel with children
If a child travels unaccompanied, or with only one parent or guardian, local immigration authorities may ask for either:
- documents to prove that the children have consent to travel, or
- proof of parental responsibility
This is particularly the case if the child is of Pakistani origin.

How long must my Australian passport be valid for Pakistan?
We quote the official text word for word and do not summarise it. The official sentence does not match a wording we summarise.
Official text, “Passport”:
Australian citizens and dual nationals
If you're an Australian citizen or Pakistani Australian dual national, you should travel on a valid Australian passport. If you travel on a Pakistani passport, you may encounter difficulties departing Pakistan or travelling to Australia without a valid Australian passport.
To depart Pakistan, you should have a valid Australian passport and
- a valid National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis; or
- a valid Pakistani visa; or
- a valid Pakistani passport; or
- a valid exit permit, where applicable.
Pakistani authorities may prevent you from boarding a flight if you attempt to travel to Australia using only a Pakistani passport and an Australian citizenship certificate.
For information on applying for an Australian passport in Australia, visit the Australian Passport Office website.

Validity
Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months before entering or departing. This includes for transit.
If your passport expires too soon, you might not be able to travel.
The Australian Government doesn’t make these rules. Check your passport’s expiry date before you go. If you’re not sure, it’s a good idea to get a new passport.
The same section also has Smartraveller's general notes (“Lost or stolen passport”, “Passport with ‘X’ gender identifier”), the same on every destination page: read them on the official page.
