Do Australians need a visa for New Caledonia?

We quote the official text word for word and do not summarise it. The first official sentence does not match a wording we summarise.

Official text, “Visas and border measures”:

Each country or territory decides its own entry and exit rules, including health border screening measures. To find out what you need to enter a destination, ask their embassy, consulate or immigration office.

Visas

You likely won't need a visa for a tourist visit of up to 3 months. However, the total length of your stay must not exceed a total of 90 days over a period of 180 days (6 months).

You may need to show proof of:

  • sufficient money for your stay
  • return or onward travel ticket
  • adequate travel or health insurance covering medical and hospitalisation expenses as well as any repatriation costs, including medical evacuation
  • the purpose of your visit

In other situations, you'll need a visa issued by the French representations in your country of residence and, subject to your circumstances, a work permit issued by the Government of New Caledonia. Further information is also available (in French) on the French High Commission in New Caledonia website.

Contact the Consulate-General of France in Sydney, Consulate-General of France in Melbourne or the Embassy of France in Canberra for the latest visa requirements.

Border measures

Check with your airline or travel provider on minors' travel regulations, including those travelling unaccompanied.

Entry protocols apply to private sailboats and cruise ships visiting New Caledonia. All immigration, customs and biosecurity services procedures must be completed in Noumea as the first port of entry, with some approvals required before arrival. During a crisis, arrivals by sea may be prohibited or restricted by local authorities.

Contact your airline, cruise line, local port agent, tour operator or local employer, for the latest updates.

How long must my Australian passport be valid for New Caledonia?

In its “Travel” section, Smartraveller gives no passport validity period specific to New Caledonia.

The official “Passport” text below is Smartraveller's general advice, the same on every destination page. Check the rule with the embassy of the country and with your airline before you travel.

Official text, “Passport”:

Validity

Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months before entering or departing. This includes for transit.

If your passport expires too soon, you might not be able to travel.

The Australian Government doesn’t make these rules. Check your passport’s expiry date before you go. If you’re not sure, it’s a good idea to get a new passport.

The same section also has Smartraveller's general notes (“Lost or stolen passport”, “Passport with ‘X’ gender identifier”), the same on every destination page: read them on the official page.
