Do Australians need a visa for Azerbaijan?

We quote the official text word for word and do not summarise it. The official text also mentions an eVisa, electronic travel authority, arrival card, online form or registration, visa on arrival, tourist card or fee: read it in full.

Official text, “Visas”:

Each country or territory decides its own entry and exit rules, including health border screening measures. To find out what you need to enter a destination, ask their embassy, consulate or immigration office.

Visas

You'll need a visa to visit Azerbaijan.

You can apply for an electronic visa (e-visa) valid for 90 days, allowing you to stay in Azerbaijan for up to 30 days. You can do this online through Azerbaijan's Official Electronic Visa Portal. Allow at least 3 business days for processing a standard e-visa and 3 hours for an urgent e-visa (additional service fee applies).

If you don't abide by your visa or permit terms, you may be fined, deported and banned from re-entering Azerbaijan.

Ensure your passport is valid for at least 3 months from the expiry date of the e-visa.

Visa extensions

You can apply to extend or renew your visa through Azerbaijan's State Migration Service. Keep a copy of your passport and existing visa while your application is being processed. The Ministry of Interior Police may ask to see your documents at any time. See Local laws.

Registering with the police

If you plan to stay in Azerbaijan for over 15 days, you must register with the State Migration Service online (registration upon place of stay) or at regional migration departments (www.migration.gov.az), even if you have a 90-day visa. Do this within 10 days of arrival. If you don't, you'll be fined.

You may not be able to leave Azerbaijan until you pay the fine and get an exit permit from the State Migration Service.

Azerbaijan border

This information will be reviewed regularly. Borders can open and close and entry and exit requirements can change without notice, especially during a conflict. Confirm requirements with local authorities.

Check the latest information from local authorities on entry requirements and border arrangements. Plan for possible delays at border crossings. Make sure you have all documentation, and enough food, water and medication.

Travel restrictions may apply to Australians travelling overland from Azerbaijan to neighbouring countries.

Check the nearest embassy or consulate of Azerbaijan for any travel restrictions. You'll also need to check the rules of neighbouring countries.

Departing Iran

The Astara pedestrian border crossing on the Azerbaijani side is currently open 24/7 for exceptional crossings by third-country nationals. The border crossing on the Iranian side may be closed to all travellers, regardless of nationality.

The Astara land border crossings on both the Iranian and Azerbaijani side may open and close at short notice for both pedestrian and vehicle movements. Check with local authorities on entry requirements and border arrangements.

To cross the border, requirements from the Azerbaijani authorities are a:

• visa

• border crossing code.

The Australian Embassy in Türkiye must request a border crossing code on your behalf. Contact consular.ankara@dfat.gov.au and provide a copy of your visa and valid travel documents. We can only request codes for Australian passport holders and accompanying permanent residents. It can take at least 4 business days for Azerbaijan authorities to issue a border crossing code. Wait times can vary significantly. Requirements may change without notice.

Travel via Nagorno-Karabakh

If your passport has visas or stamps from Nagorno-Karabakh, you could be refused entry into Azerbaijan. Land borders are currently closed except for freight.

How long must my Australian passport be valid for Azerbaijan?

We quote the official text word for word and do not summarise it. The official sentence does not match a wording we summarise.

Official text, “Passport”:

Validity

Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months before entering or departing. This includes for transit.

If your passport expires too soon, you might not be able to travel.

The Australian Government doesn’t make these rules. Check your passport’s expiry date before you go. If you’re not sure, it’s a good idea to get a new passport.

The same section also has Smartraveller's general notes (“Lost or stolen passport”, “Passport with 'X' gender identifier”), the same on every destination page: read them on the official page.
