What the official sources say
Where it applies
Our translation: In some mountain areas you must fit winter tyres to your vehicle or carry snow chains or snow socks during the winter period.
Our translation: The prefects of 34 departments in mountain ranges (Alps, Corsica, Massif Central, Jura, Pyrenees, Vosges) must draw up the list of towns where vehicle equipment becomes mandatory in the “winter period”, that is from 1 November to 31 March.
Our translation: A plate under the sign shows the winter period, to remind road users that these obligations only apply from 1 November to 31 March. The signs are needed for the rule to be enforceable.

Which tyres count
Our translation: Only 3PMSF tyres are accepted as equivalent to removable anti-skid devices (3PMSF stands for “Three peak mountain snow flake”, which means “mountain with three peaks and a snowflake”).
Our translation: You can still buy and use other types of snow tyres, but in that case you must also carry removable anti-skid devices.

Snow chains
Our translation: Between 1 November 2026 and 31 March 2027, cars, vans and motorhomes must, in the areas set by the prefects of departments, either carry removable anti-skid devices for “at least 2 drive wheels” (metal snow chains are recommended if you often drive in these areas, textile snow socks for occasional use), or have 4 tyres suited to winter driving (winter tyres).
Our translation: You must check that the removable devices fit the size of your wheels and the space between the wheel and the bodywork.
